13-year-old distributes LED bulbs to the underprivileged under UJALA

A 13-year old girl, Meera Vashisht, from Houston, Texas, has distributed 1,800 LED bulbs to residents of JJ clusters in Keshavpuram in Delhi. The girl raised funds amounting to Rs 140,000 to purchase bulbs under the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) programme. She became aware of the UJALA programme while working on her 7th grade science project. She reached out to about 500 people in her vicinity over almost a year and was able to raise the funds for the LEDs. Over 126 million LED bulbs have already been distributed across India under UJALA. This is leading to energy savings of about 44.8 million kWh per day and the avoidance of about 3,278 MW of peak demand.
