India Power Corporation Limited (IPCL) has augmented its low tension (LT) business in the distribution licensee areas of Asansol and Raniganj, catering to domestic and commercial loads at 415/220 V. IPCL has more than 1,400 LT consumers at present and expects to reach a consumer base of at least 5,000 by the end of 2016-17. In the past, IPCL’s key focus was on high tension (HT) bulk industrial and commercial consumers, supplied at 11,000 V. For the past nine decades, it has supplied quality power to heavy industries, big commercial establishments, hospitals, major educational institutions, Eastern Railway, public water works and Eastern Coalfields Limited.
The company has formulated several schemes in order to penetrate further into the LT market. These include market fragmentation through cluster-wise location mapping. Some of the areas identified as potential load zones for LT business are Barakar, Kulti, Raniganj and Gopalpur. IPCL is the only utility that gives its consumers an option of prepaid or post-paid meters as per the requirement and choice of the applicant. Consumers are motivated to switch to IPCL’s network because of tariff benefits and better services in terms of less interruption and quick maintenance for power restoration. Moreover, interested consumers are provided with hassle-free switchover service at their doorstep by IPCL.
