A.R. Kumar

Head, EPC Operations, Solar, Anchor Panasonic

As head of EPC operations, solar, at Anchor Panaso-nic, A.R. Kumar’s responsibilities include driving profits and revenue for the solar projects division in India. This entails a thorough understanding of customer needs and working with other business units to create new solutions for the Indian market. Kumar is an engineering graduate with over 24 years of experience in solar operations and EPC. He has earlier worked with companies like  Tata BP Solar India, Reliance Industries and AEG Power Solutions. He has also spoken at several conferences, including CII Renewable Energy & Climate Change and Intersolar.

Kumar believes that the government’s focus on renewables and conserving traditional energy resources makes solar a viable option for residential, industrial and public spaces. Anchor Panasonic aims to become an industry leader in the captive rooftop segment by utilising Panasonic’s manufacturing and project execution expertise. He sees major potential in the renewables sector, particularly in generation, conservation and storage, given that the grid is yet to reach several parts of the country. With new technologies being introduced and product lifespans increasing, there is scope to utilise this energy source to ensure uninterrupted supply.

Commenting on sector and policy issues, Kumar says that the government needs to standardise and revise solar norms, and ensure that policies are uniform across the states. “Substandard Chinese panels have found their way into the Indian market. Hence, for the industry to thrive, the government should look into developing the solar market and supporting the manufacture of ancillary products such as energy storage. Further, it needs to ensure that high efficiency technologies are promoted,” he says.

Kumar is a result-oriented professional, who believes in driving higher execution excellence and optimising high performance. He says that his individual ideology resonates with Panasonic founder Konosuke Matsushita’s principle of collective wisdom. He believes that good work is accomplished not by an individual, but by a team of individual professionals. While one may have the ability to lead from the front, it is equally imperative for a unit to set ethical and exemplary standards in executing a project. A core aspect of his leadership style is customer centricity, and he believes in ensuring that customer needs are addressed. In his free time, Kumar likes to read and listen to music.
