The 1,200 MW Teesta III hydropower project in Sikkim is expected to be fully completed by March 2017. Power from the project is likely to be evacuated by May 2017. Out of the six units of 200 MW each, three units have already been synchronised. Teesta Urja Limited, a joint venture of the Sikkim government (51 per cent stake) and other investors including Asian GencoPte Limited, Athena Projects Private Limited and PTC India Limited, is implementing the project. Clearances for the project were received by November 2007 and civil works were started in January 2008. The first unit was to be commissioned in 2013 but was delayed due to the 2011 earthquake and other issues.
