The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) has deferred the forest clearance for the 3,097 MW Etalin hydroelectric project (HEP) in Dibang valley, Arunachal Pradesh. The FAC found major inadequacies in the environmental impact assessment report as it did not cover the project’s impact on the region’s biodiversity aptly. The committee now plans to award the HEP’s biodiversity assessment study to an internationally acclaimed agency. Earlier in February 2017, the project was reported to have received environmental clearance subject to certain conditions. The project is being developed by Etalin Hydro Electric Power Company Limited, a joint venture (JV) of Jindal Power Limited and Hydro Power Development Corporation of Arunachal Pradesh Limited.
