Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir to resume work on Shahpur Kandi HEP

The Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir governments have agreed to resume work on the 206 MW Shahpur Kandi hydroelectric project across the Ravi river in Gurdaspur, Punjab. The project with a 55.5 metre high dam entails an investment of Rs 22.86 billion (2008 price level). It will ensure better utilisation of India’s rights over the eastern rivers of the Indus basin. Construction was started in 1999 but it came to a halt in 2014, when the Jammu & Kashmir government claimed that there was no agreement for sharing of water and power from the project.
