WEC and L&T to proceed with building nuclear reactors in Andhra Pradesh

US-based Westinghouse Electric Corporation (WEC) plans to go ahead with its proposal to build six nuclear reactors in Andhra Pradesh in partnership with Larsen & Toubro Limited. The recent decision of Toshiba Corporation, WEC’s Japanese parent organisation, to withdraw from its lead role in setting up atomic power stations has raised doubts over WEC’s various nuclear projects worldwide, including those in India. WEC will provide the AP1000 pressurised water reactors of 1,100 MW each for the proposed project. However, it will not conduct any civil engineering work as this approach had led to cost escalation in its US projects.
