Clearance for Tawang HEP deferred by MoEFCC

The expert forest panel of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has deferred clearance to the 600 MW Tawang hydroelectric project (HEP) Stage I until a study is conducted on it, as the location is a vital wintering ground of the black-necked crane. The Arunachal Pradesh government had sought the diversion of 187.2 hectares of forest land for the construction of the HEP on the Tawang Chu river in Tawang by NHPC Limited. The Rs 48.24 billion project is among the 11 HEPs totalling 2,802 MW of capacity proposed in the Tawang river basin in Arunachal Pradesh.
