Nigeria approves construction of HV transmission lines associated with 3,050 MW Mambilla HPP

Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing has approved the construction of high voltage transmission lines associated with the 3,050 MW Mambilla hydropower project (HPP) in Taraba. The HPP, along with the transmission lines under discussion since 1972, has finally received funding from the EXIM Bank of China. Of the $5.8 billion project cost, 85 per cent will be funded by the EXIM Bank of China and the remaining by Nigeria’s federal government. The transmission component of the project involves putting in place 700 km long transmission lines comprising two corridors – one between Mambilla and Makurdi, and the other between Mambilla and Jalingo. The civil and electromechanical works of the entire project will be undertaken by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation on a turnkey basis. Construction of the HPP and transmission lines is expected to be completed by 2024.
