Prime Minister launches the Saubhagya Scheme for last mile electricity connectivity

The Prime Minister has launched the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana or Saubhagya scheme to provide last mile electricity connectivity to all rural and urban households in the country by December 2018. The scheme with a capital outlay of over Rs 160.32 billion will provide power connections to an estimated 40 million unelectrified households. These connections would be provided free of cost to the poor while others will get it for Rs 500, payable in 10 instalments. Further, solar panels along with five LED lamps, a fan, and a plug point along with repair and maintenance services for five years will be provided under the scheme. Rural Electrification Corporation Limited is the nodal agency for the scheme.
