Generation and capacity addition

Power generation recorded a compound annual growth rate of 5.34 per cent to reach 1,154,524 MUs in 2016-17 from 722,626 MUs in 2007-08. Thermal generation accounted for 86 per cent of the total generation in 2016-17, while hydro accounted for 11 per cent.

The year 2016-17 saw a capacity addition of 25.53 GW, lower than the 30.98 GW in 2015-16. In 2016-17, capacity addition from renewables accounted for 11.31 GW and exceeded that from coal (10.6 GW), hydro (1.66 GW), nuclear (1 GW) and gas (926 MW).
