Central government plans to introduce the proposed Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2016

The central government is planning to introduce the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the upcoming winter session of Parliament. Among other things, the proposed bill seeks to introduce competition in the distribution segment by giving an option to consumers to choose their electricity supplier. The bill was deferred last year after it faced resistance from the states. In order to address the concerns of states, the bill is likely to do away with deadlines for implementation.
