NHPC to bid for the $2.5 billion 1,200 MW BudhiGandaki HEP, Nepal

NHPC Limited is reportedly planning to bid for the $2.5 billion 1,200 MW BudhiGandaki hydroelectric plant (HEP) in Nepal. The project was initially awarded to the China Gezhouba Group Corporation; however, the Nepal government recently cancelled its contract owing to transparency issues. In a related development, the Nepal government has decided to extend the financial closure timeline for the 900 MW Upper Karnali HEP and the 900 MW Arun III HEP by six more months. GMR Energy and SJVN, respectively, are developing the projects and have been facing several challenges such as compensation, land acquisition and forest clearance.
