Bahrain’s EWA awards Euro 80 million cables contract to Prysmian Group

Italian Prysmian Group has secured a Euro 80 million contract from Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) to develop a new 400 kV cable loop circuit, including a cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) submarine cable section. The contract for the project, which was part of EWA’s strategic 400 kV transmission development programme (2009-13), involves the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a 400 kV AC power link, which includes a section of XLPE submarine cable. This will be the first 400 kV XLPE submarine cable to be installed in the Gulf Cooperation Council Region. Under the contract, the Prysmian Group will supply three submarine 400 kV cables with XLPE insulation and a total length of 13 km, and 400 kV HVAC land XLPE cables with a total length of 46 km. The turnkey project is expected to be commissioned by 2019.
