MoP plans to penalise discoms for power cuts deemed avoidable

The Ministry of Power (MoP) is planning to impose penalties on distribution companies for power cuts deemed as avoidable from April 1, 2019 onwards. The move is part of the government’s plan to provide reliable electricity supply to all by 2019. The MoP will also mandate the installation of prepaid meters for small consumers and smart meters for large ones to increase billing compliance.
