According to BP’s Energy Outlook 2018, India’s energy consumption is expected to grow by 4.2 per cent per annum, the fastest among all major economies, by 2040, with coal contributing the most to meeting this demand, followed by renewables. Coal’s share in generation is expected to drop from 77 per cent in 2016 to 64 per cent in 2040 as renewables rise from 5 per cent to 23 per cent.
