Shikoku Electric Power Company to decommission Unit 2 of the Ikata nuclear power plant in Japan

The Shikoku Electric Power Company has decided to decommission Unit 2 of the Ikata nuclear power plant in Japan. The unit is a 538 MWepressurised water reactor that began operations in March 1988. As per the guidelines of the Japanese government issued after the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, the operation of nuclear reactors is limited to 40 years in principle. The company has stated that the cost of modifications required for meeting the revised safety standards will make it uneconomical to restart the plant and, therefore, has decided not to extend the reactor’s operation for another 20 years.
