Kenya’s KETRACO commissions 220 kV underground cable

State-owned Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has commissioned the 7 km long, 220 kV Athi river – Embakasi underground cable (UGC) that passes through the Nairobi National Park. The UGC is the first of its kind as it will serve as an alternative power route and also evacuate additional capacity to Nairobi from the Olkaria geothermal power plant. The UGC will act as a bridge for two major projects – the 400/220 kV mombasa-Nairobi transmission project and the 400 kV Suswa-Isinya line project, both of which will get access to Nairobi, and also connect other cities in the country with the Olkaria geothermal field.
