The Russian State Atomic Corporation has launched a floating nuclear power unit, a first of its kind globally. It is a pilot project for mobile, medium capacity range nuclear power units. Developed by Akademik Lomonosov, the plant will replace a coal-fired power plant and an ageing nuclear power plant supplying power to over 50,000 people in Chukotka. The nuclear power plant is equipped with two nuclear units that have a cumulative generation capacity of 70 MW. Construction of the floating reactor began in 2006, and it will become operational in Pevek, an arctic port town in Russia, by 2019.
