Central government to award new transmission contracts to Powergrid

The central government has planned to award contracts for new transmission corridors worth Rs 250 billion to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (Powergrid) on a nomination basis. The decision has been taken owing to severe transmission constraints and mismatch in the commissioning of renewable energy projects and associated transmission infrastructure, necessitating the need for intervention by Powergrid. To this end, the government has identified dedicated transmission corridors and substations with a capacity to transmit around 18,500 MW of electricity from various wind and solar plants in the western and southern regions.
