Central government extends the Off-Grid and Decentralised Solar PV Applications Programme – Phase III

The central government has approved the continuation of the Off-Grid and Decentralised Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Applications Programme – Phase III to achieve an additional 118 MW of off-grid solar PV capacity by 2020. Under the programme, 0.3 million solar street lights will be installed throughout the country, with a special emphasis on areas that lack street lighting systems through grid power. Further, solar plants with capacities up to 25 kWp will be set up in areas where grid power has not reached yet/is not reliable. For solar street lights and solar power plants, the government will provide financial support of up to 30 per cent of the benchmark cost of the system for all states, except for the north-eastern states and island union territories, where the quantum of assistance would be 90 per cent of the benchmark cost. The scheme is likely to benefit 4 million rural households in the country.
