MoP asks states to import coal to meet demand

The Ministry of Power (MoP) has written to the states notifying the issue of coal shortage and asking them to import coal to meet the demand. The issue of coal shortage will be resolved once new mines commence production but this may take two to three years. The Central Electrcity Authority has also stated that thermal power plants must import coal to compensate for domestic shortages. The power sector’s coal requirement is estimated at 615 million tonnes for 2018-19. Although Coal India Limited has increasedthe production by 15.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2018-19, it has failed to keep pace with the spike in coal demand due to greater electricity requirement in the summer season, and unavailability of power from hydro-and gas-based plants.
