Siemens completes 14.4 GW Megaproject in Egypt

The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Siemens and its consortium partners – Orascom Construction and Elsewedy Electric – have commenced operations of the 14.4 GW Egypt Megaproject. The project comprises three combined cycle power plants at Beni Suef, Burullus and New Capital, which will cumulatively supply power to around 40 million people in Upper Egypt, Delta Nile and Greater Cairo. Each of the three power plants are powered by eight gas turbines, four steam turbines, 12 generators, eight heat recovery steam generators, 12 transformers and a 500 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). With this project, Egypt and Siemens have set a new world record in the execution of modern, fast-track power projects, delivering 14.4 GW of power in only 27.5 months.
