Power generation recorded a compound annual growth rate of 5.81 per cent to reach 1,201,065 MUs in 2017-18 from  722,626  MUs in 2007-08. Thermal generation accounted for 86 per cent of the total in 2017-18, while hydro and nuclear accounted for 10.5 per cent and 3.2 per cent respectively.

The year 2017-18 saw a capacity addition of 21,293 MW, lower than the 25,528 MW in 2016-17. In 2017-18, the renewable energy segment accounted for the maximum at 11,788 MW, followed by thermal and hydro. No nuclear capacity was added in 2017-18.
