Algeria’s Société Nationale d’Electricité du Burkina (SONABEL) and Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) have commissioned the 225 kV Bolgatanga–Ouagadougou interconnection executed by the French company Eiffage Energie. The cross-border project involves the construction of a 210 km long overhead transmission line from Bolgatanga (Ghana) to Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). With the line, Ghana will now be able to supply 100 MW of electricity on a daily basis to Burkina Faso. This accounts for roughly one-third of the latter’s energy demand. The World Bank, Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the European Investment Bank, and developers SONABEL and GRIDCo have jointly funded this $111 million project, which is a part of the Inter-zonal Transmission Hub Project to link the grids of Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali and Côte d’Ivoire.
