MERC issues notice to AEML over inflated bills

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has issued a notice to Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML) seeking an explanation for inflated bills received by consumers. MERC had approved an average tariff hike of 0.24 per cent for 2018-19. However, consumer complaints highlighted that electricity billing was based on average energy consumption instead of actual meter readings. The move comes after the Maharashtra government directed the energy department to conduct an audit of the past three months’ billing process at AEML. In case of excess billing, the money is proposed to be refunded with interest.
