Tanzania’s environment council approves construction of 2,100 MW Stiegler’s Gorge HEP

Tanzania’s National Environmental Management Council has approved the construction of the planned dam at the 2,100 MW Stiegler’s Gorge hydroelectric project (HEP). The council has stated that the HEP will comply with all the relevant environmental protection measures. In October 2018, the Arab Contractors Company received a contract to design and construct the dam and the power plant. The project will comprise the main dam with a height of about 134 metres and a reservoir of 100 km length, covering an area of about 1,350 square km. The project was conceived over a decade ago, as a part of Tanzania’s master power plan, which envisages Stiegler’s Gorge HEP to interconnect the grids of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia.
