Cambodia seeks assistance from Japan for transmission project

Cambodia has sought assistance from Japan to finance a high voltage transmission network to import electricity from Laos to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Electricite du Cambodge had signed an agreement to purchase 200 MW of power from Laos. The electricity will be produced at Laos’s Don Sahong hydropower dam, located near the Laos-Cambodia border. The project is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2021. Cambodia is facing a power shortage, and is thus planning to import power from Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.
