The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) has issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) over the installation of smart meters. The meters are being installed based on the old 2G and 3G technologies. The order came in response to a petition filed by the Uttar Pradesh Power Consumers Council to review the smart meters being installed as these were not based on the latest 4G technology. UPERC has also asked UPPCL for details of the entity which will bear the cost of upgrading the smart meters and the net impact of the installation on operational expenditure. The total project cost of installing 4 million smart meters in consumers’ premises across Uttar Pradesh has been estimated at Rs 19.27 billion. At present, 200,000 installations have already been completed.
