The cabinet has approved the promulgation of the Mineral Laws (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020. The move will open up coal mining in the country to non-coal companies as well as remove restrictions on end use of the fuel. It is expected to help create an efficient energy market, bring in competition and reduce coal imports. Under the ordinance, the requirement of prior approval in cases where allocation of blocks was made by the centre has been dispensed with, to speed up the implementation of projects and for enhance the ease of doing business.
