Ashish Gupta

President and Head, Hydro Projects, Contracts & Legal, Gammon Engineers and Contractors Private Limited

Ashish Gupta has been associated with Gammon Engineers and Contractors Private Limited for more than 29 years. During his tenure, he gained extensive field experience in the bridges and hydropower project segments across West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh in planning, DPRs and project construction. He is currently a board member and heads contracts, legal, hydropower, tunnelling, engineering, procurement and construction of large projects such as dams, tunnels and power-houses across India and Bhutan.

Gupta informs that Gammon has a presence in all types of power projects including nuclear, thermal, hydro as well as transmission and plans to augment its expertise, equipment and manpower to participate in a larger way in all these segments. Gammon has a roadmap to continue to implement transmission lines and increase its participation in rehabilitation projects.

Gupta says that given the government’s focus on the development of the power sector, the declining share of hydropower in the total energy mix needs attention. The revised hydropower policy should help boost the development of this segment, especially pumped storage projects, which are essential for meeting peaking demand. However, the biggest challenge for the segment’s development is the lack of uniform and consistent long-term policies by the central and state governments. Gupta says, “The country in the past suffered due to shifting preferences from one type of energy to another; hence, a long-term government initiative on the right mix of thermal, gas, nuclear, solar, wind and hydropower is a must.” Further, clearances, financing, DPRs are some other issues that need focus.

Gupta cherishes all his hydro projects, especially in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland in the early 1990s in various capacities, which gave him immense learning not only in terms of project management but also geology, area, logistics, personal living and local issues. He describes his success mantra as “enjoy your work” and “enjoy working with team”. His family includes his father, a civil engineer with military engineering service, his mother, wife and two sons.

A postgraduate in civil engineering, Gupta has an LLB, an MBA from S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai, and has done training and advanced courses at NITIE-Mumbai, IIM Ahmedabad and ISB Hyderabad.
