Ethiopia–Kenya grid HVDC link to be completed by September 2020

The Ethiopia-Kenya Electricity Highway (high voltage direct current [HVDC] link) Project is set for testing and commissioning by September 2020. The 500 kV link being developed by the state-owned Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation and Kenya Electricity Transmission Company aims to reduce energy costs, and promote sustainable and renewable power generation. It will be the first HVDC line in East Africa and will also become a major channel of outbound power transmission for Ethiopia.
