Parliamentary Committee expresses concern on power sector’s budget

The Parliamentary Committee on Energy has expressed concern over the lower budgetary allocation for the power sector in the Union Budget 2020-21. As against the Ministry of Power’s (MoP) proposal of Rs 333.67 billion, the gross budgetary allocation to the ministry is Rs 158.75 billion, nearly the same as in the previous year. The committee believes that this may adversely affect the progress of various central government schemes such as the Integrated Power Development Scheme and the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana. The committee has recommended that adequate funds should be provided to the MoP at the time of review so that timely implementation of important programmes can be ensured.
