ABB commissions world’s first 1,000 kV UHV gas-insulated line in China

Swedish-Swiss power and automation technology company ABB, via its power grids business vertical, has successfully commissioned the world’s first 1,000 kV UHV gas-insulated line (GIL) laid in the Sutong tunnel, under the Yangtze river located in Jiangsu province of China. ABB had partnered with SGCC in 2017 for the Sutong line project to transmit clean energy from West to East China. The 5.4 km long transmission line in the Sutong tunnel is part of the Huainan-Nanjing-Shanghai UHV alternating current (AC) transmission link, which aims to bring 6 GW of clean power to the dense metropolitan area of Shanghai.
