AIPEF urges PM to put Electricity Bill on hold

The All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) has appealed to the prime minister to put the draft Electricity (Amendment) Bill on hold. The Ministry of Power (MoP) had circulated the draft bill for feedback of the stakeholders in April 2020.

The AIPEF has cited that certain provisions in the Bill are against the federal structure where electricity is a concurrent subject. Reportedly, states such as Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Puducherry have expressed their objections to the Bill. AIPEF has further noted that the amendments are based on the privatisation agenda which is not justified for a key infrastructure such as electricity.
