CIL’s exploration arm adds 7.8 bt to proven coal reserves

Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited, the exploration arm of Coal India Limited, added 7.8 billion tonnes (bt) of coal to India’s proven reserve base in 2019-20, the largest addition so far in a year far.

CIL also added 9.75 bt of reserves to new resource category based on preliminary exploration. These involved detailed exploration on 128 blocks and regional exploration of 17 blocks for coal and lignite. India’s proven coal reserve is estimated at 155.6 billion tonnes, based on detailed exploration, while reserves were estimated at around 326 bt, as of April 2019.
