India and Bhutan sign agreement for first JV hydro project

The Indian and Bhutanese governments have signed a concession agreement for the development of 600 MW Kholongchhu hydroelectric project (HEP) in Trashiyangtse, Bhutan.

This is the first time an India-Bhutan hydropower project will be constructed as a 50:50 joint venture (JV) and not as a government-to-government agreement. The project will be implemented by a JV of Indian’s SJVN Limited and Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation. The signing the concession agreement will lead to the start of construction of the HEP which is expected to be completed in 2025.
