Rajiv Kumar

Chief Operating Officer, Intellismart Infrastructure Private Limited

Rajiv Kumar has 23 years of experience in digital energy for transmission and distribution utilities. He has worked in a wide variety of functions including P&L management, business development, engineering, strategic marketing, consultative selling, solutions architecture, sales and tendering, end-to-end project execution, performance monitoring of large contracts, and long-term strategic and operational planning.

He is currently chief operating officer with Intellismart Infrastructure Private Limited, a joint venture of the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). He took over this role in February 2020 and is focused on driving the Smart Meter National Programme pan-India. The programme is aimed at improving billing efficiency and thereby digitally transforming the distribution utilities.

Prior to this role, Kumar was general manager of EESL. Earlier, he worked for almost a decade with central transmission utility Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, as a part of its corporate engineering core team. During the course of his career, he has worked on various international assignments in South Europe, East Asia and the Middle East.

Commenting on the progress in smart meter deployment towards the 250 million target, Kumar says, “The company has fared well and deployed 1 million meters in calendar year 2019. This is one of the fastest smart meter roll-outs globally.” This achievement was possible owing to the deployment of 5,000 to 6,000 smart meters on average per day, he notes. The company plans to install 15,000-20,000 smart meters per day and, going forward, hopes to achieve almost 50,000 installations per day. It is also striving to ensure that the AMI structure is in place fully and is maintained digitally.

The ongoing pandemic has certainly had an adverse impact on deployments and time has been lost, he notes. The company plans to regain this lost time and is attempting to stabilise the disruptions in the supply chain. Overall, the outlook for the year is positive, he believes, and the company is confident of moving ahead with its mission and multiplying its efforts, going forward.

An electrical and electronics engineer from BITS Mesra, Kumar also has a postgraduate diploma in international business management from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi.
