Electricity demand to be lower by 7 to 17 per cent by 2025 due to Covid-19

Demand for electricity in India will be lower by 7 to 17 per cent due to Covid-19 by 2025, as per a new report by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

The report, titled ‘Bending the Curve: 2025 Forecasts for Electricity Demand by Sector and State in the Light of the COVID Epidemic’, has been launched by the power minister. Electricity demand in India’s 10 largest power consuming states is expected to be 5-15 per cent lower than it would have been without the economic shock caused by COVID-19, according to the report. The report also suggests policy makers, developers, distribution companies, and investors need to be better prepared for the future, if the decline in demand growth persists.
