Australia grants major project status to Australia–ASEAN power line

The Federal government of Australia has accorded major project status to the AUD22 billion Australia–Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) power line project (AAPL), which aims to export power from an Australian solar farm to Southeast Asia, via undersea cable.

The project will utilise intercontinental 4,500 km long (out of which 3,711 km will be undersea), high voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine transmission systems, to supply renewable electricity to major load centres in the Indo-Pacific and support the region’s low-emissions goals. The project is being developed by Sun Cable and is slated for completion by end-2027.
