Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Limited (TANTRANSCO) is expected to complete the 765 kV Virudhunagar–Coimbatore transmission line, under the larger Chennai–Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor (CKIC) Power Sector Investment Project by 2022. The power line will transfer 9,000 MW of additional capacity from the southern region of CKIC, Virudhunagar, to the northern industrial hub at Coimbatore, and then on to Chennai.
About 6,000 MW of the total 9,000 MW will be evacuated from renewable energy (RE)-based generation plants in southern CKIC. Tenders have been awarded for the line project and the work commenced in February 2020. The line is slated for completion by June 2022.
