Power ministry asks industry to launch phased manufacturing programme to replace imports

The power ministry has asked domestic equipment manufacturers to launch a phased manufacturing programme to replace items being imported, especially from China, and assured them of 100 per cent preference to Made in India equipment in contracts. The power ministry also plans to create a separate division in the ministry for 100 per cent indigenisation of the power industry.

India’s power gear imports stood at Rs 710 billion in 2019, including Rs 210 billion from China. Ever since the ministry put curbs on power gear imports from China, the ministry has been asking industry to step up and expand the range of local manufacturing.
