Punjab government defaults on power subsidy payment to PSPCL

The Punjab government has not cleared about Rs 35 billion worth of payments for power subsidies being given to various categories of consumers during the first four months of 2020-21.

The state government is yet to pay Rs 34.89 billion to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) for free power. From April 1 to August 15, the state government was supposed to pay Rs 66.96 billion to PSPCL. However, the government has only released Rs 23.84 billion to PSPCL. The state government also asked PSPCL to adjust electricity duty worth Rs 2.67 billion and infrastructure development fund worth Rs 8.2 billion collected by the power utility from consumers against power subsidies.
