Generation and capacity addition

Power generation recorded a compound annual growth rate of 4.96 per cent to reach 1,244 BUs in 2019-20 from 805 BUs in 2010-11. Thermal generation accounted for 84 per cent of the total in 2019-20, while hydro and nuclear accounted for 12.5 per cent and 3.7 per cent respectively.

The year 2019-20 saw a capacity addition of 15.7 GW against 14.2 GW in 2018-19. In 2019-20, the largest capacity was contributed by the non-conventional energy segment at 8,711 MW, followed by thermal and hydro. No nuclear capacity was added in the previous fiscal.
