NHPC plans to commission Lower Subansiri project along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border by March 2022

NHPC Limited plans to commission the 2,000 MW Lower Subansiri hydroelectric project along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border by March, 2022.

Work on the dam had come to a halt in 2011 following massive protests from several organizations. Therefore the cost of the project has escalated to Rs 200 billion from the previous estimate of Rs 69 billion. Once the project is operational, Assam will get free power of around 25 MW from it. Apart from this, the quota of power for Assam has been enhanced to 508 MW, adding 300 MW of power from central quota’s share. On the other hand, Arunachal Pradesh will also get around 200 MW of free power from the project as a major portion of the submerged area is located in the frontier state.
