He succeeds Sanjeev Nandan Sahai, who superannuated on January 31, 2021. Alok Kumar was serving as additional chief secretary, Industrial Development and IT & Electronics, Government of Uttar Pradesh. He is a civil engineering graduate from IIT-Roorkee and holds a MBA in financial management. He has authored a book on policy and regulation of electricity industry in India which was published by Oxford University Press in 2012.
