WBERC allows net metering for rooftop solar plants installed before June 30, 2021

The West Bengal Electricity Regulatory Commission (WBERC) has allowed consumers who install solar photovoltaic systems before June 30, 2021 to install net metering facilities.

In January 2021, the WBERC had issued amendments to the co-generation and electricity generation from renewable sources regulations (2013). Before these amendments were introduced, net metering was allowed only for institutional, industrial, commercial, and housing complex consumers with grid-connected rooftop systems above 5 kW. However, in these amendments, the commission has allowed net metering for agricultural and all other consumers with a sanctioned load of up to 5 kW and net billing facilities for consumers with load higher than 5 kW. Existing net metering consumers can continue with their arrangements.
