The annual electricity demand in India fell for the first time during2020-21in at least 35 years.
The decline in power demand was mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic-induced lockdown across the country, which had resulted in a steep fall in power usage. The fall in demand continued for six months since the imposition of lockdown up to August 2020. Notably, the electricity demand in the country is estimated to be 123.2 BUs in March 2021, showing an increase of 22.9 per cent as compared to March 2020.
