Singapore’s utility to build Southeast Asia’s first large-scale underground substation

Singapore’s electric utility SP Group plansto build a large-scale underground substation in Labrador, in a move to optimise space for urban development in land-scarce Singapore.

The 230 kV substation will be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, and will serve the electricity needs of nearby towns such as Alexandra, Clementi, Keppel, Pasir Panjang and the Science Park district. The Labrador substation will free up about 3 hectares of prime land, which will then be utilised for a 34-storey development. South Korean Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai) has been awarded the contract for building the substation. The project is expected to be fully functional by 2024.
