MSEDCL issues disconnection notices to consumers who owe dues of more than 2 months

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has startedissuing disconnection notices to consumers who owe dues of more than two months, demanding for payment of dues within 15 days.

As per section 56 (1) of the Indian Electricity Act (IEA), 2003, it is mandatory to serve notices to consumer 15 days prior to the disconnection. These notices are being sent to the consumers via SMS on their registered mobile numbers. The measure has invited sharp criticism as a section of consumers are in a weak financial condition due to the pandemic situation and curbs associated with it.
